How do I calculate working hours in a month?
- Count the workdays in the month: the weekdays you normally work, such as Monday to Friday.
- Subtract holidays your employer gives off that land on those days.
- Multiply by hours per day. 21 workdays × 8 hours = 168 hours.
The calculator does this for every month of the year at once. Pick a year and month, set hours per day and your workdays (4-day weeks and weekend schedules work too), and choose whether to remove federal holidays. The highlighted row is the month you picked.

Worked examples
Example 1: November 2026
November 2026 has 21 weekdays. Veterans Day (Wed, Nov 11) and Thanksgiving (Thu, Nov 26) leave 19 working days, or 152 hours at 8 hours a day.
Example 2: a 4-day, 10-hour schedule
Mon–Thu, 10 hours a day, in March 2026: 18 workdays = 180 hours, compared with 176 on a 5 × 8 schedule.
Example 3: monthly pay from an hourly rate
At $25/hour, an average month is 173.33 × $25 = $4,333.33. A 184-hour month like July 2026 pays $4,600.00, and a 160-hour month pays $4,000.00, if you're paid hourly.
Why is the average 173.33 hours?
A 40-hour week over 52 weeks is 2,080 hours a year. Divided by 12 that is 173.33 hours a month, the figure HR and payroll use to turn a monthly salary into an hourly rate. A year is actually 52 weeks and 1 or 2 days, so the real total is 2,080 to 2,096 hours. See how many work hours are in a year for the yearly view with paid time off.
