Salary to Hourly Calculator

Turn any salary (yearly, monthly, biweekly or weekly) into an hourly rate, plus your effective rate after long hours or time off.

To convert a salary to an hourly rate, divide the annual salary by 2,080, the hours in a 40-hour, 52-week year. $50,000 a year is about $24.04 an hour. For a monthly salary, multiply by 12 first; for biweekly pay, multiply by 26. If you work more than 40 hours a week, divide by your real annual hours.

How do I use the salary to hourly calculator?

  1. Enter the salary and choose whether it is per year, month, two weeks, week or day.
  2. Set your real schedule: hours per week and paid weeks per year. Leave 40 and 52 for the standard conversion.
  3. Add paid days off (optional) to see your effective rate per hour actually worked.
  4. Read the hourly rate and the same pay as a daily, weekly, biweekly and monthly amount.

Salary offers, job ads and paychecks quote pay in different units. Turning them all into an hourly rate is the easiest way to compare a salaried job with an hourly one, judge whether long hours are worth it, or price freelance work.

What is that salary per hour?

40 hours a week, 52 paid weeks (2,080 hours), before taxes:

A quick shortcut: halve the salary and drop three zeros ($50,000 → about $25). It runs slightly high, since 2,080 hours is more than 2,000.

Worked examples

Example 1: $50,000 a year

$50,000 ÷ 2,080 hours = $24.04 an hour, $961.54 a week, $4,166.67 a month.

Example 2: a monthly or biweekly salary

$4,500 a month × 12 = $54,000 a year, ÷ 2,080 = $25.96 an hour. A $2,400 biweekly paycheck × 26 = $62,400, ÷ 2,080 = $30.00 an hour.

Example 3: long hours and paid time off

On $50,000 working 45 hours a week, the rate drops to $21.37 (÷ 2,340 hours). On $65,000 with 25 paid days off (holidays plus vacation), you're paid for 2,080 hours but work 1,880, so each hour worked earns $34.57 instead of $31.25.

How do salaried and hourly jobs compare?

An hourly worker earning the same nominal rate is usually paid for every hour, including overtime at 1.5 times the rate after 40 hours. Exempt salaried staff are not. If a $55,000 role regularly runs 50 hours a week, it pays about $21.15 per hour worked, which can be less than a $24 hourly job with paid overtime. Benefits, paid time off and retirement matching often outweigh the difference, so compare total compensation too.
