How do I use the day of the week calculator?
- Enter a date in the past or future, or click Today.
- Read the weekday, whether it is a weekend, which occurrence of that weekday it is in the month (for example the 4th Thursday), and the day of the year.
- Compare with today: the result also says how many days ago or from now the date is.
How is the day of the week calculated?
The Gregorian calendar repeats every 400 years, and those 400 years contain exactly 20,871 weeks. That makes weekdays predictable: the calculator turns the date into a count of days from a fixed starting point, divides by 7, and the remainder is the weekday. Leap years are included, which is why a date usually moves one weekday later each year, but two weekdays after February 29.
A quick check without a calculator: your birthday falls one weekday later each year, or two if a February 29 comes between. If November 3 is a Tuesday in 2026, it is a Wednesday in 2027 and a Friday in 2028.
Worked examples
Example 1: a historical date
The Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776, a Thursday, day 186 of a leap year.
Example 2: a future holiday
Christmas 2026, December 25, is a Friday, so the federal holiday is observed on the day itself and many workers get a three-day weekend.
Example 3: a leap day
February 29, 2028 is a Tuesday, the 5th Tuesday of February and day 60 of 2028.
What day of the week are the major holidays?
| Year | Jan 1 | July 4 | Oct 31 | Dec 25 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Thursday | Saturday | Saturday | Friday |
| 2027 | Friday | Sunday | Sunday | Saturday |
| 2028 | Saturday | Tuesday | Tuesday | Monday |
| 2029 | Monday | Wednesday | Wednesday | Tuesday |
| 2030 | Tuesday | Thursday | Thursday | Wednesday |
When a federal holiday falls on a Saturday it is usually observed on the Friday before, and on a Sunday the Monday after. The business days calculator applies those rules when counting working days, and the week number calculator shows which week a date falls in.
