How do I use the days until calculator?

  1. Pick an event such as Christmas, New Year's Day, Halloween or Thanksgiving. The next date for it is filled in for you.
  2. Or choose any date in the date box: a birthday, a trip, a wedding or a payday.
  3. Read the countdown in days, in weeks and days, and in months and days. The table lists the next date and count for every popular holiday.

How is the countdown calculated?

The calculator reads today's date from your device and subtracts it from the target date on the calendar. Only whole days are counted, so the result does not change during the day or when clocks change for daylight saving time. Once an event has passed, the countdown rolls over to the next year's date automatically. Holidays that move, like Easter and Thanksgiving, are worked out for each year rather than copied from a list.

Worked examples

Example 1: days until Christmas from a set date

From Tuesday, November 3, 2026 to Christmas, Friday, December 25, 2026, is 52 days: 7 weeks and 3 days.

Example 2: the day after Christmas

On December 26, 2026 the next Christmas is Saturday, December 25, 2027, so the countdown restarts at 364 days. 2027 is not a leap year; from December 26, 2027 it would be 365 days, because February 2028 has 29 days.

Example 3: a holiday that moves every year

Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November. In 2026 that is Thursday, November 26, 2026, 23 days after November 3. In 2027 it falls on November 25, 2027.

Frequently asked questions

How many days until Christmas?

The live countdown at the top of this page shows it, counted from today's date on your device. Christmas is always December 25. The count does not include today, so on December 24 it shows 1 day. For a ticking clock with hours, minutes and seconds, open the Christmas countdown.

Does the countdown include today?

No. It counts the days after today up to and including the target date, so on Christmas Eve there is 1 day to go and on Christmas Day the countdown shows “Today”.

Why can my countdown differ from a friend's?

The calculator uses each visitor's own calendar date. Near midnight, someone in another time zone may already be on the next day, so their count can be one lower.

How are Easter, Thanksgiving and Mother's Day worked out?

They move every year, so each date is calculated for the year: Easter Sunday uses the Gregorian Easter rule, Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, Mother's Day the second Sunday of May and Father's Day the third Sunday of June.
