How do I use the New Year countdown?
- Open the page. The countdown reads your device's date, time and time zone.
- Watch the clock count down the days, hours, minutes and seconds to midnight on January 1.
- Plan the rest of the year with the business days and weekends left, and see when midnight reaches other cities in your own time.
How is the New Year countdown calculated?
Whole days are calendar dates subtracted from January 1, so a daylight saving change cannot throw them off. The clock adds the time left until your local midnight tonight. On January 1 the page shows that it is New Year's Day, and on January 2 it rolls over to the next year by itself.
Worked examples
Example 1: from a set date in November
From Tuesday, November 3, 2026 to Friday, January 1, 2027 is 59 days, or 8 weeks and 3 days. Only 39 business days are left in 2026 after Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas are skipped.
Example 2: New Year's Eve
On December 31, 2026 the count is 1 day. The clock then shows only the hours, minutes and seconds left until your local midnight.
Example 3: a year when the holiday moves
January 1, 2028 is a Saturday, so the federal holiday is observed on Friday, December 31, 2027. From Monday, December 27, 2027 there are 5 days to go but only 3 business days.
